A New York Minute

Yesterday was a day of discoveries about time. I never realized that New York City has its own time, especially when it comes to dining.
It started with a plan for a classic Saturday brunch. We found an inviting Irish place with an appetizing brunch menu ($4 for a bloody mary, including a beer chaser) - alas, brunch in Iowa City takes place between 8-11:30. 8 AM?! That's not even BRUNCH, that's breakfast! By the time we arrived, we had to settle for the lunch menu.

The next discovery took place later that day. Saturday night, and Becky and I decided to check out Devotay, one of the top restaurants in town, before going out on our nightly let's-try-every-bar-in-town hop. I was pretty worried, as it was 9 PM on a Saturday night, and I expected a line out the door. Wouldn't you?
Oh, no. My discoveries from last night are the following:
- Restaurants close at 9 PM on weekdays, 10 on weekends. The line out the door is at 6:30-7 (when every sane New Yorker is having his after-work pre-dinner drinks).
- Just in case you were reading too fast: RESTAURANTS CLOSE AT 9 PM.

Becky wasn't surprised at all, having had some suburban experience, which I lack. I mean, 9?! Well, if brunch is at 8 or 9 AM, I can see how dinner is at 7. I'll have to get used to this.

The absolutely last discovery of the night is that all bars in town close at 2. Which makes perfect sense if dinner is at 7. I'm not sure what to make of all this.

Well, sure, but what did you think of my restaurant?

Hope you enjoyed your meal, despite the uncivilized hour, and that you'll have a chance to return soon.

Oh, the meal was great - no doubt the best we've had in town so far. The bison meatballs impressed us the most.

Your waiter probably remembers us - two clueless girls walking in at 9 PM :) I'll come by and say hi next time I'm there.
